I still remember learning how to swim. There is something so terrifying about the swimming pool when all you have ever known is the safety of a cramped bath tub. So much water. I can still see my dad standing in the pool a few feet from the edge trying to motion me into his arms from the pool’s edge. As if he had forgotten that I can barely walk let alone manage a swimming pool, he waved his arms and laughingly joked about my fear and lack of trust. However, when it came down to it he is my dad and even with the paralyzing fear I trusted that this must be safe…so I jumped!
Sometimes facing something challenging in our lives or specifically a calling that God has given us can create that same fear in our hearts. We quickly realize that if we jump then my goodness we will be in over our heads. Maybe, if we can gain the perspective that it is our heavenly father that is calling us to himself and we can trust Him, then that leap has great possibilities. I trusted that my dad had good intentions for me because I knew his character and his love. Embracing our calling means trusting in the character of God. One pastor said it this way, “Faith is a decision to believe when it doesn’t make sense, accompanied by a love so fierce that nothing can compromise it.” So what in your life has been conquered by fear? Where might God be calling you to trust Him?
“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” -1 Thessalonians 5:28
