The Key to the Kingdom

Week 1 –Humility
True humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less” – C.S. Lewis

When Jesus Prays in Matthew 6:10… “Thy Kingdom Come Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” He was not beaconing us to leave this world and to enter into heaven. No, he was calling for the Kingdom of heaven to be established right here in our midst… right here in our hearts.

All throughout the sermon on the mount he gives us glimpses of what this means. For the next 6 weeks through our Lenten journey, we are going to look at the 7 characteristics of a citizen of the kingdom of heaven.

Matthean Jesus leads with it, and ties it to a call, an invitation to blessing. Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”.

When we, or I get bored, I far too often pick up my phone. I instantly see my reflection in the glass, which opens a picture of me and my family.
Then I instantly see red dots calling to me. Notifications for me, people wanting me… if for nothing but to sell me something.

Without intentionality, everything revolves around me. To be poor in spirit is not a socio-economic statement, otherwise he would have simply said, blessed are the poor. It’s, a call to humility of heart, and a call to an intentionally redirected focus

One can be rich or poor and filled with pride, fixating on himself, her own wants or his own needs. But a citizen of heaven has, in the here and the now,a gaze affixed to Christ, a longing to see the kingdom come in and through their daily interaction.

What truly matters in life? Are we driven by worldly accomplishments or a deeper understanding of our dependence on God?

Today, consider the ashes as a symbol of impermanence. Letting go of an egocentric gospel; remembering the Kingdom is not about you.
