#6: Marriage of Word and Deed

1 John 3:18

Dear children, let us not love only with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Kid’s see everything. I know this is true because my daughter has the same sassy hair flip as my wife… no way that is genetic. Though they don’t like to admit it, they hear you too.

Words are important. Words articulate complexities, give clarity to instruction, and set expectation. But action… actions reveal the heart. We have all heard “Do what I say, not what I do,” but in reality, it tells a story that is not convincing, that wreaks of inauthenticity. I believe, these two must be in conversation, married in agreement, to be authentic and effective.

In a world filled with false gospels, I believe it is no longer adequate to simply do good in the name of the church and call it evangelism. Which church? The Christian Church… there is a whole lot of nuanced spirituality happening underneath that tent. Actions alone testify with a lack of clarity and as our friend John says, “We must learn to be a people of words, speech, action and truth.”

RELFECTION:

Which part of your witness is God calling you to grow in?
